Kenya Women’s Volleyball national team is arguably the most successful volleyball side in Africa. It has been consistent in the continent and beaten great teams such as Egypt and Algeria. It regularly participates in the Olympic Games, save for Beijing where Algeria grabbed the only ticket to represent Africa.
The team first took part in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, when African teams were given a chance to compete among themselves and not with a team from Europe. Before Africa was given the chance, it was difficult for the continent to get a ticket to the Games. The team has also taken part in the World Championships and the World Cup. It has already sealed a slot for the 2010 World Championships in Japan. Even though the team’s show at global events has not been impressive, it has shown that it will not be long before it catches up with the best of the world.
The team first made an appearance at the World Cup in 1991 in Japan after winning the All Africa Games the same year. The first appearance at the World Championships was at the 1994 event in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Since then, the team has not failed to get a slot in the event held every four years. After Sao Paulo, the team played in the 1998 event in Tokyo, Japan, and Berlin, Germany, in 2O02 and Japan four years later.
ln Africa, Kenya has won more than 15 Africa Championships titles, including the Africa Cup, World Championships and World Cup qualifiers tournaments.
