John Njoroge Michuki was born 1932 at Muguru village, Iyego Location, Kangema Division in Murang’a County. Educated in Kenya and abroad, Michuki has emerged as one of the prominent and long-serving civil servants and politicians as well as a businessman in Kenya.

John Michuki  is the Minister for Environment and Mineral Resources. Formerly has held Roads and Public Works docket.

He joined the government service after his ‘O’ level examinations, and was appointed to the provincial administration as a clerk in 1957. He was promoted to the position of district officer in 1961.

That same year he joined Oxford University on a government scholarship, and studied public administration and economics at Worcester College. Upon graduation, he was appointed district commissioner to Nyeri before being posted to the Treasury as an Under Secretary in 1963, the year of Kenya’s independence.

Michuki was promoted to deputy Permanent Secretary to the Treasury in 1964 and appointed Permanent Secretary the following year. In his new position he represented the government on numerous boards and in various capacities, including as alternate Governor for Kenya on the boards of the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation.

He retired from government service following his appointment as Chairman of the Kenya Commercial Bank on 1st November, 1970 and left for business in the private sector.

Michuki was appointed minister for Transport and Communications by President Kibaki when the NARC government assumed power in 2002, before being moved to the Minister for Provincial Administration and Internal Security since 2005. Michuki was later appointed as Minister for the Environment and Mineral Resources in the Grand Coalition Cabinet named on April 13, 2008

Personal Life

Michuki is married to Josephine Watiri Michuki, and has six children (three boys and three girls). He is the Chairman and majority shareholder of Windsor Golf & country club, Nairobi—which he built after losing the Mlolongo elections of 1988.Michuki is also the Managing Director of Fairview Investments Ltd and Kangema Farmers Ltd which are involved in coffee farms, tea farms and Real Estate among other things.

John Njoroge Michuki died on 21 February 2012.
