Machakos county is an administrative county in the Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Machakos. The county has a population of 1,098,584 (2009 census).
The local climate is semi arid. The terrain is hilly, the county has an altitude from 1000 to 1600 metres above sea level. Akamba people are the dominant tribe.
Machakos county borders Embu County to the North, Kitui to the East, Makueni to the South, Kajiado to the South West, Nairobi and Kiambu to the West, and Murang’a and Kirinyaga to the North West. Machakos County stretches from latitudes 0º 45’ south to 1º 31’ south ad longitudes 36° 45’east to 37° 45’ east.
