In addition to the commendable act of abandoning the demeaning designation of 'nyika', it is high time we named ourselves correctly, and not use words with negative innuendos ('tribe') that were carelessly thrown at us by our erstwhile colonial rulers. We may still be economically colonized thanks to those who sign our wealth away in exchange for servitude, but let us name ourselves by our proper names, 'nations', 'peoples', but not tribes, if only to enhance our pride & dignity in both our differences and our common bond as one supra-nation.
Thus, the Mijikenda, ethnologically speaking, are a nation, and should be referred to as such. Their languages are diverse from one ethnic group (jibana, kambe, rabai, etc) to another.
