Kenya Vision 2030 social pillar – Education and training – The sector is expected to provide globally competitive quality education, training and research for sustainable development, which will position Kenya as a regional centre of research and development in new technologies.
To achieve this, the following initiatives are being undertaken;
(i) Integrating early childhood education into primary education;
(ii) Reforming secondary school curricula;
(iii) Modernising teacher training;
(iv) Strengthening partnerships with the private sector;
(v) Developing key programmes for learners with special needs;
(vi) Rejuvenating ongoing adult training programmes;
(vii) Revising the curriculum for university and technical institutes to include more science and technology; and Increase public funding, in partnership with the private sector, to enable all these institutions to support activities envisaged under the economic pillar The MTP targets for education and training are;
- The construction and equipping of 560 secondary schools;
Expansion and rehabilitation of
- existing schools;
- Recruitment of 12,600 additional teachers;
- Establishment and implementation of a computer supply programme;
- Construction and rehabilitation of at least one boarding primary school in each constituency in arid and semi- arid lands; and
- Establishment of a voucher feeding programme in ﬁve of the poorest districts.
Construction and equipping of 560 secondary schools and building at least one boarding primary school in each constituency in the ASALs districts, are on—going. The Ministry of Education disbursed more than Kshs6.7 billion ($79 million) to 355 secondary schools for transformation into centres of excellence and to 18 national schools for infrastructure improvement.
Under the Economic Stimulus Programme, two primary schools in each constituency – a total of 420 – were identified and supported, at a cost of Kshs3.5 million ($41,176) each for development into model primary schools.
The computer supply programme has built capacity among teachers, provided colleges and schools with local area networks (LANs) and internet connectivity and equipped district education offices and secondary schools with computer facilities.
Development of digital content for all subjects in Form One is complete and in use while there are ongoing efforts to complete the digitisation for all other secondary school classes.
Many of the ﬂagships under this ministry are either on or slightly behind schedule and are likely to be accomplished within the ﬁrst MTP.

Two taskforces, one on basic education and the other on higher education and training, have completed work and their output will inform the future of education and training in Kenya.
