Controversial preacher Gakuyo surrenders to the DCI
Controversial preacher Dr” David Kariuki Ngare, alias Gakuyo surrendered to officers at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Together with other six other Sacco officials, Gakuyo was grilled for half an hour by top officers including Head of Serious Crimes Unit Joseph Kariuki.
Their surrender came a day after Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi cautioned officials who have been misusing Sacco funds.
Matiangi cited the recent incident where thousands of members lost over Sh2 billion at the Ekeza Sacco where Gakuyo is accused of having embezzled members’ funds.
The Interior CS maintained that rogue officials will be prosecuted after the conclusion of investigations being carried out by the DCI.
Gakuyo reportedly used the money to upgrade his lifestyle by buying prime properties for his family and boosting his struggling real estate firm.
Reports indicated that Ksh1.5 billion was unlawfully transferred to the accounts of Gakuyo’s Real Estate, where he is the managing director and his wife Hannah Wachu a co-director.
Only an estimated third of the money, Ksh507,900,374 could be traced to members who took out loans from Ekeza to acquire properties from Gakuyo Real Estate.
A damning audit report by the government on the Sacco’s operations revealed that irregular cash outflows of an estimated kSh1.5 billion from Ekeza account to Gakuyo Real Estate.
NTV Exposes Billionaire Gakuyo for Allegedly Faking Degree to Run for Kiambu Governor
23 02 2017
Bishop David Kariuki Ngari, popularly known as Gakuyo (borrowed from his multi-billion firm Gakuyo Real Estate), had announced that he would be seeking the Jubilee ticket in the race to replace Governor William Kabogo.
The investigative report established that in anticipation of the requirements needed to qualify for governor, Gakuyo started a process of obtaining a degree and even obtained papers that appeared to have been forged.
They further reported that the bishop-turned-politician submitted a primary school certificate to the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), indicating that he had sat his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) in 1983.
However, the NTV team showed that the certificate had glaring spelling mistakes and had an index number that did not match the school indicated.
Upon checking the class list for Munyu Primary School where Gakuyo reportedly obtained the certificate, they explained that his name was not among the 76 pupils who sat for the 1983 exam.
NTV investigative reporter also reported that the leaving certificate awarded to Gakuyo had been issued in 2004 – 21 years after he had left school.
Despite the anomalies and the fact that he did not provide any proof of secondary education, Gakuyo was admitted at JKUAT and allowed to pursue a certificate in County Governance at their Westlands Campus, even performing well in his first semester.
However, his dream of continuing with an Executive Master of Science in Governance and Leadership was cut short after the registrar at JKUAT’s Westlands Campus deregistered him for failure to provide any proof of attaining secondary school education.
