Rongo University College is a public institution which was established by Excellency President Mwai Kibaki, Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces through Legal Notice NO.70, Kenya Gazette Supplement NO.51, on 17th June 2011.
The University Campus is located on Kitere Hill, 8 kilometers from Rongo Town, and 2.5 kilometers off Kisii – Migori Highway. It is situated on the precincts of the former Moi Institute of Technology, (MIT), which began in 1981 as a technical training college for Certificate, Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes
Innovative Programmes
The Degree and Diploma programmes that are on offer are strongly anchored on practical orientation through more contact hours of class work, field work and industrial attachment which is expected to give the students a more holistic understanding of the environment in which they operate. In so doing, Rongo University College aims at producing students that capable of self-employment and job creation rather than relying on formal employment only. In addition, they will fit well in the job market and environment as graduates who are responsive to societal needs. This is in line with the Kenya Vision 2030 which emphasizes job creation and industrial growth through exploitation of national skills and human resources.
Degree Programmes
The University has two types of modules for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The full time students are taught during the day from Monday to Friday. There is also a flexible schedule for those who are working during the day to be taught on weekends. The School-based programme is designed for teachers and is conducted from mid-November, December, April and August when schools are closed. This includes Diploma, Degree and Masters programmes. There are also plans to introduce open and distance learning programmes to cater for those who are in far flung areas in the rest of the country.
TIVET Programmes
(Technical Industrial Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training) Globally, technical education is acknowledged as a means for transforming and empowering the youth with skills, knowledge and, attitudes to enable them become productive members of the society. It is on this basis that the Government of Kenya has, and continues to support TIVET training and institutions. Rongo University College will endeavor to develop practical skills of TIVET programmes by taking a different approach which emphasizes attachment in training of its graduates as emphasized by TIVET institutions and the Government.
Affordability & Quality
Affordability and quality assurance in all facets of university training have presently acquired a new meaning. Being a public university college and a nonprofit making institution, the focus is on high quality and affordable service delivery to all Kenyans of all walks of life. The University College is well equipped with laboratories, centres of excellence, library, teaching restaurant, and relevant equipment for effective instruction and training of students.
