Francis Atwoli Biography
Francis Atwoli born in 1950 is a Kenyan Trade Unionist and Labour Leader both in Africa and globally who has dedicated close to three-quarters of his life in the service of the working men and women with a strong conviction to serving mankind. He is the secretary general of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (Kenya), a position he has served in since he was first elected in 2001. He is also one of the Board of Directors at National Bank of Kenya Ltd.

He was married to RoseLinder Simiyu Atwoli who was contesting for Webuye West parliamentary seat in the 2017 general election. During the campaign, she was not using his husband’s name as she did not want people to perceive that she was leveraging her relation to Atwoli to vie.
“In most cases, I have tried to avoid the name of my husband because people will perceive that am leveraging my relation to Atwoli to vie, “I am the only women currently in the race for this seat and nobody should expect special treatment,” said Simiyu as quoted in the Standard.
Atwoli recently added another wife to the several he already has after marrying KTN news anchor Mary Kilobi who is said to be carrying his child. The 34-year-old anchor defended her union with the unionist boss who is double her age saying she loves him to death.
Atwoli revealed he already bought Kilobi a brand new vehicle with reports indicating its a high-end machine which cost several millions of shillings. The unionist said with his other wife has decided to join politics, he felt lonely and had to get another woman to take care of him in his sunset years.

Firebrand COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has for the first time revealed how he met KTN’s Mary Kilobi and promised to marry her when she was of age. Appearing on Citizen TV’s JK Live, Atwoli disclosed that, he met with Ms. Kilobi 13 years ago in Uganda at a time she was only 21 years old and vowed to marry her when she matured.
“When I met her about 13 years ago, that’s is in 2005 in Kampala and she was at that time with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) and I was in a company of my second wife whom I have released to go and do politics and she has taken over. At that particular time we talked and she was still young at around 21 years old and I told her when you mature even if it takes 1000 years I will marry you. After she stays in Uganda she came back to Kenya, got a job with KTN. And because of the nature of work I do, you need somebody to assist you, you want somebody to rush and get you something and it must be a person you trust. She is my assistant, she is my lover, she is my wife and she got to take care of me. Am a stupid Lover,” Said Atwoli.
Atwoli added that he respects her elder wife so much because of the commitment she has shown throughout their relationship and kept together with his family.
The COTU boss was responding to Jeff Koinange’s question after he asked him to speak to his wife Mary Kilobi who was watching the program at home.
“I tell she is a nice lady, she is taking care of me, she is committed to our relationship and that does not mean I don’t respect my elder wife, she is a wonderful mama she has kept me together and she is doing a commendable job”, added Francis Atwoli.
Asked about their age difference Atwoli stated that “There is no age limit between a man and a woman, everywhere in the world,”.

He has three sons. His elder son, Lukoya Atwoli, is a senior lecturer at Moi University and a consultant psychiatrist with his own practice. He once accused him of being one of the major driving forces behind the historic doctors’ strike that saw doctors out of work for more than 82 days now. Atwoli said Lukoye has been urging doctors to refuse to end the strike as private practitioners continue reaping benefits in seeing patients.

He also has an adopted daughter Valentine Nekesa, who he adopted after her mother passed away, she was the first winner of Shs 5 million on BLAZE BYOB. She is also an entrepreneur, designer and motivational speaker, who is the Founder of Nekesa Queens Limited, a company that she formed in 2014, at age 17.

He studied at St. Mary’s School, Nairobi, an all-boys’ non-residential school, administered by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi. He completed his O-Level studies there. Later, between 1974 and 1992 he earned labor scholarships at the ILO College of International Labour Studies in Turin, Italy, the Cotu Institute of Education in Limuru, Kenya and George Mini Labor Centre in Maryland, United States.

After he completing his ‘O’ level studies at Nairobi’s St Mary’s High School he became a technician with the East African Post and Telecommunications in June 1967. After three months in his job, he became a shop steward and his first salary was Sh140 and a house allowance of Sh40. But the money was delayed for three months since it had to be captured in the payroll system. In 1986 he was sacked in “public interest.”
Between 1974 and 1992 he earned labor scholarships at the ILO College of International Labour Studies in Turin, Italy, Cotu Institute of Education in Limuru and George Mini Labour Centre in Maryland, USA.
Later he joined Cotu after his attempt to become general secretary of the Union of Post and Telecommunications Employees flopped. “I was rigged out of the elections,” he asserts.
In 1994 he was elected general secretary of the Kenya Agriculture and Plantation Workers Union after two of his predecessors died in quick succession. This seat enabled him to vie for a Cotu position when former boss Joseph Mugalla retired.

In April 2019, while speaking to the media, Atwoli allegedly made a comment that the Deputy President William Ruto might not even appear in the ballot papers come 2022 in the general elections. This statement received mixed reactions from the politicians and the public. Some supported him while others lashed out at him for making such allegations.
