Friends School Kamusinga Management
Friends School Kamusinga success that had hitherto been overshadowed by what current Board of Governors (B.O.G) chairman, Dr Noah Sitati terms as mismanagement and political interference was revived in 1996 when Christopher Khaemba (former Alliance High School Principal, former Dean African Leadership Academy in South Africa, former advisor on education to Prime Minister’s office and current member of the Executive Nairobi City County, in charge of Education, Youth Affairs, Culture, Children and Social Services), took over the helm of the school.
Former long-serving BOG Chairman Jonathan Cheloti says Mr. Khaemba started a new program of a strict selection of students based on merit & achievement and improved the school administration and governance which he says has been maintained to date, contributing to its success.
The school performance took an upward trend with the introduction of Mr. Khaemba’s management system that was emulated from the Alliance High School where he had been the deputy principal.

Friends School KamusingaStudent Life
Having been founded by Christian missionaries, most notable of which was Allan Bradley, the school holds Christian values with high esteem. The weekly Sunday Chapel Service (except on Saturdays) is compulsory for all students.
However, being a national school that draws students from all over the country, Friends School Kamusinga has a small population of non-Christian students, mostly Muslims. These students have the liberty to practice their faith.
The Friends School Kamusinga community is rich in culture. Upon arrival, every form 1 student is assigned to a ‘guardian’ who is a form 2 student who will help the new student find his way around the school in the first few weeks.
Over the years, the school has opened and closed its term calendar on Thursdays. The first Saturday of the term is often marked with a cross-country race. Closing days are characterized by a school dinner on the closing eve, where students are treated to a sumptuous meal and an award ceremony held.
The most popular form of entertainment in the school is the Saturday movies. Every Saturday the entertainment committee, consisting of Form 2’s, Form 3’s and form 4’s, the entertainment department, consisting of about 5 prefects, organizes and prepares the Saturday movies. The school Worship Department also organizes Christian Union sessions that are optional on every Saturday evening.
The school has a compulsory use of full cutlery set – fork, spoon, and knife – during meals, which was resisted by shagz-modos, but most students and alumni are now grateful as it accounts for their refined etiquette.
Various platforms like the drama and music competitions provide students with a chance to showcase their talents. The drama club organizes the biggest comic show of the entire year called “Talent’s Night” where students simulate the Monday morning School assembly and try to imitate their teachers.
The school choir also organizes the Music Night which features presentations not only from the choir but also dances from all the communities in the country.
The school has thirteen houses, which house almost 1200 students. The houses are, in order of age, and with the reason for their name:
- Victory House.
- Elgon House.
- Kenya House.
- Amugune House.
- Allan Bradley House named after the school founder Allan Bradley.
- Kenyatta House.
- Nakhisa House.
- Chetambe House.
- Harambee House.
- Nyayo House.
- Mailu House named after old boy Cleopa Kilonzo Mailu who is the current Cabinet Secretary of Health in Kenya.
Many activities within the school are based on the house system. This includes the arrangement at the parade ground where assemblies are conducted every morning and role callparades conducted. Inter-house competitions include music, science congress, elocution, drama, math contest, Swahili contest, essay writing contest, battle of the blocks writing challenge, cleanliness competitions, and sports such as soccer, rugby, racquet games, swimming, and others.
At the end of every term, during the school dinner, awarding sessions are held where the winning house in every category receives a carton of biscuits. First and second runners up receive half and quarter a carton respectively. The winning house in standards and athletics, K.C.S.E., and cross country is awarded a bull or a number of pigs which are slaughtered and offered for a party.
The prefects are key to the running of the school. It is they who see that the school routine and school rules are adhered to. They have the authority to punish culprits via the prefect’s punishment department. Punishments include washing corridors and rooms, slashing fields and in some extreme cases, working in the school farm or uprooting tree stumps. Punishees are announced on parade everyday of the week and assigned for punishment
A total of about 90 prefects are chosen each year and among the 90, 24 of the most outstanding prefects are given top honors in becoming Senior Prefects or Captains. These Captains are allocated various major departments in the school. The school’s departments include:
