Hotels in Kenya
Kenya Hotels – Kenya’s abundance of natural produce, combined with the rich variety of cultures and traditions, have created a great culinary nation.
The fertile volcanic soil of the Rift Valley produce a bounty of fresh vegetables, while the coast is a great source of tropical fruit and fresh seafood.
The coast is also the home of the world renowned Swahili cuisine, a blend of Middle Eastern and African cooking with a particular coastal twist.
Kenya Hotels – Nyama Choma
Further inland, Kenyans are formidable meat eaters. One of the best known Kenyan specialities is Nyama Choma- meaning literally ‘roasted meat’. There are many popular ‘Choma Joints’ in most Kenyan towns. Probably the best known is Nairobi’s Carnivore, Kenya’s most famous restaurant.
This is usually slow roasted over an open fire or charcoals, and served with a mixture of basic greens (known as Sukuma Wiki) and Ugali. Ugali is the much loved staple food of Kenya. Essentially a stiff porridge of maize flour, Ugali is served in large, freshly cooked bricks. Pieces of Ugali are broken off and used to eat either meat, stews or vegetables.
Kenya Hotels – Vegetarians
Vegetarians need not feel threatened- Kenya’s large Asian population has led to a great many Indian, Pakistani and sub-continental restaurants throughout the country. Excellent vegetarian meals can always be found alongside the best of regional Indian cuisine.
All over Kenya, the climate is ideal for alfresco dining. In many camps, lodges and restaurants, meals are served outside, letting you enjoy a feast with a view. You can start the day with a bush breakfasts after an early morning game drive, and finish it with sundowner drinks and snacks taking in the view of one of Kenya’s spectacular sunsets.

Hotels in Kenya vary enormously in price and facilities, and the one to five star hotels rating given by the Ministry of Tourism is not an accurate basis of comparison. Better to inquire at a local travel agent or book through one of the larger hotel chains. Luxury hotels in Kenya offer excellent standards of service and are comparable to the best hotels anywhere in the world.
Cheap Hotels in Kenya
First and second class hotels vary widely in service and facilities but are generally comfortable, with private bathrooms and European style food. Small rural hotels (hoteli) will offer extremely basic accommodation and are not recommended to visitors for a number of reasons ranging from security to hygiene.
Kenya Hotels – Lodges in Kenya
Lodges in Kenya are located in the national parks and reserves and are, of necessity, limited; they are also usually expensive. The food and facilities, however, are generally of the highest standard.
Kenya Hotels – Tented Camps
Comprising a small selection of permanently sited canvas tents, which are roofed, pitched on a concrete base or raised wooden platform, and
often with a bathroom to the rear, tented camps have little to do with the vacations under canvas that visitors might have experienced. Most offer a surprising degree of luxury, with flush toilets, hot and cold running water, and electricity.
Kenya Hotels – Self catering
Economically priced self-catering bandas (simple chalets) are available in many game parks and range from simple rondavels to the houses that the wardens used to live in. Usually delightfully situated, they offer cooking facilities (which can range from a propane gas stove to a campfire) and varying standards of bed/bath facilities. A wide range of privately owned self-catering villas, houses, and beach cottages are also available
Kenya Hotels – Private Home Stays
These offer the chance of staying in a (usually white) Kenyan household, many of which are colonial-style farms in beautiful settings. The downside (for some) is that you will probably be expected to eat with your hosts, who may or may not regale you with safari tales. Prices vary greatly.
Kenya Hotels – Camps
There are more than two hundred official campsites in wilderness areas throughout the country, many in the national parks. Facilities vary. “Special Campsites” are booked exclusively in advance; otherwise you pay as you go. Beware: leaving your camp unattended is not recommended, not least because Kenyan baboons have learned how to operate zips.
