Beth Mugo Biography and Profile
Beth Mugo, was born on 11th July 1939 in Kiambu district. She is a Kenyan politician and currently a nominated senator. She is the former Kenyan Minister of Public Health and Sanitation. She also serves as Founder and Managing Director of Beth International Limited. She is a founder member of the Kenya Management Assistance Program.
Beth Mugo Education and Career
Beth Mugo holds a Diploma in Business Management from Goldey-Beacom College, Delaware in the United States, completed a certificate course in Mass Media from Syracuse University in New York, and received a National Teachers’ Certificate from Kambui Teachers Training College in Kiambu.
She has been a headmistress at Kiganjo Primary School, held various top positions with the then Voice of Kenya Television (now the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation), and served as a director of the Kenya Women Finance Trust, a national organization founded and managed by women, to provide easy business loans to women. She is also a member of Women’s World Banking, an international micro-finance organisation that also provides loans for women.
Beth Mugo is a founder member and director of the Kenya Management Assistance Program, a national consultancy firm for new enterprises, and the founding national chairperson and national patron of the Kenyan chapter of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women.
She is also the executive director of Lobby Hotels, a joint Kenyan-German venture in the hotel industry. She is the founder and managing director of Beth International Ltd., a chain of retail outlets specializing in the export of African artifacts and jewellery.
Beth Mugo Political Career
In addition to being a founder member of the Democratic Party, Beth Mugo was a national coordinator of women’s affairs for the party. She is a member of UNDP’s Africa 2000 Network Advisory Group, and was the convener of the African region’s Preparatory Forum ahead of the United Nations’ Conference on Women held in Beijing, China in 1995
Beth is the president of the Council for Economic Empowerment of Women in Africa, a regional non-governmental organization that campaigns for economic justice for women by pushing for mainstreaming and inclusion of gender-friendly frameworks in all legislation and policy.
Beth Mugo has been the MP for Dagoretti since December 1997 representing the Social Democratic Party, presently a constituent party of the governing NARC coalition. She is a member of the National Executive Committee of the governing coalition.
