Wanjiku The Teacher why she left Churchill
1. What are the challenges you go through as a female comedian in the male-dominated industry?
You really get a lot of support, because they feel that you’re a woman, so you can’t do what a man can. Men are so many in this industry, and when it comes to women, they feel that a woman cannot deliver, and that’s why I decided to do the one-woman show and prove to people that women can also do it. But it’s not easy for a lady when men are surrounding you, because fans have this high expectation, and they keep comparing you to them, and so I decided to prove a point.
2. Do You Get Support From Male Comedians In The Industry?
Some, at least a few of them, especially the ones we started with from kitambo. Back then, I remember we worked with Chipukeezy. Actually, we’ve done a one-man show with him, about 4 to 5 years ago, but it wasn’t aired or broadcasted, so only a few people knew about it. Many people thin I started comedy at Churchill Show, but this was not the case, I started way, way back. When we exposed my character, that’s when people got to know me.
3. Talking About Churchill, Why Did You Leave The Show?
I’ve been asked this question so many times. I was only supposed to do the show for a year, because I joined the show in 2013 in February and it was supposed to end in December 2013. So, when the contract ended, I didn’t want to continue, but the decision was thought of when I joined because we had said it was supposed to be like that, even Churchill knew it.
When I left, people didn’t really accept it because I kinda admit I left prematurely. It’s not easy to do what I did, you know, because I had already made a home for myself there, and then the name became so big, so people have different things to say, as to why I left the show. Some said, oh, I got money so I left, I have pride now, so I didn’t want to listen, but that was not the case.

The reason why we did that, is because there’s a danger with comedians being in one place for a very long time. If I would have stayed in Churchill, does it mean I wouldn’t bore people? So what would happen is such a case. After the show, we were supposed to do other projects outside Churchill show, which we are also working on, now that I’m back after the baby. And people are expecting a lot of negative things as to why I left the show, which is sad.
