Oil in Kenya
Oil in Kenya: Oil discovery after exploratory drilling by oil companies in Kenya around the Turkana region signified a major breakthrough for Kenya.
The find at the Ngamia I well, announced in March 2012 and said to have exceeded expectations of Anglo-Irish oil exploration firm Tullow Oil, could be the start of a long journey to make Kenya an oil producer.
Tullow Oil is drilling more wells to establish the commercial viability of the oil. The firm will also continue to drill Ngamia-I well to a total depth of approximately 2,700 metres to explore for deeper potential.
The net pay encountered so far in Ngamia-1 is said to be more than double that encountered by Tullow in any of its East African exploration wells to date.
Tullow Oil, which also struck oil in neighbouring Uganda, has found oil in, or off the coast of, a number of African countries, including Ghana and Sierra Leone.

Oil in Kenya – Oil Exploration Results
To date, a total of 32 wells have so far been drilled in the country. Some 17 are located in Lamu Basin, 11 in Anza Basin, 2 in Mandera Basin and 2 in the Tertiary Rift. Of these, 20 had hydrocarbon shows with more than seven known oil seeps spread throughout the four basins.
This confirms that all four Kenyan sedimentary basins possess mature hydrocarbon regimes capable of accumulating economical reserves where sub-surface rocks, reservoirs and traps do occur in the right combination to denote the potential for oil production.
The interest shown by international companies in East Africa and Kenya in particular, is reflected by a surge in the number of farm-ins and take overs of already signed deals that were formerly held by small and often not very well known petroleum companies worldwide by major oil players in the market. The entry of big multinational oil companies promises further increased exploration activities in the region formerly regarded as an “oil frontier. ”
Their presence has ignited high interest in major service companies which are strategising to take up existing opportunities. As an example, BGP and Great Wall companies of China have set up local offices for the same purpose while Schlumberger Company is negotiating with the University of Nairobi with an intention of setting up a local training and operations office in addition to the one it has in Uganda. The aim is to set up equipment capable of acquiring, processing and interpreting geophysical data to serve the entire East African region.
